About Us

Our family started out in the traditional path. The hubby and I went into debt to finance college educations in order to obtain careers in the "safe" field of healthcare. It wasn't until afterwards that we realized that the supposed safety came with many strings that began to strangle us. As our family grew, the demands on our time and energy were pulled towards a healthcare system that valued money over people. We felt overwhelmed, helpless and stressed.

Being responsible for small human lives forced us to question many things about the system of healthcare in which we were cogs. The more we asked questions, the more that we were unsatisfied with the traditional answers.

We wanted more. We wanted more time, more health, more family, more happiness. We were tired of giving our best energy to someone else with subpar results. We tried to change the system from within but found that we could make more of a difference on the outside. We began by starting to fix things for ourselves and our immediate family.

We moved away from traditional education and decided to homeschool. This gave us flexibility with schedule and more time together as a family. The time is precious and we love homeschooling.

We started spending more time with creative hobbies and finding ways to share them with others.

We started making changes to our food supply by purchasing food from local sources and growing some of our own. This included cooking with real ingredients and learning new skills.

We purchased a portable sawmill and set up kilns to dry the wood that we harvest. These pieces of wood are used in projects around the farm and the more unique items are sold or transformed into custom pieces.

We purchased a small farm. We want to be good stewards of the land that we inhabit. We want to give back to the earth more than we take from it. We are practicing methods that encourage nutrient enhancement of the soil rather than depletion. We are improving our composting methods and rotational grazing skills.

As we started making these changes, the kids thrived and were excited to expand the project beyond even our imaginations. They are now active participants in this life adventure that we have named Growing Roots Farm.

Our children help on the farm and also utilize time to pursue their own interests. One of our sons employs his artistic skills in the woodshop and with computer design using the CNC machine. Another son developed his own worm farm and natural fertilizer business that we are incorporating into the family farm business. Our daughter is utilizing her talents with photography to share these images with our customers. Our daughter has experimented with selling homemade bracelets, cut flower arrangements and are considering expansion into home baked goods.
