Pasture Raised Pork

Pasture-raised pork is a type of pork derived from pigs that are raised in open areas rather than being confined to indoor facilities or feedlots. This farming method prioritizes the welfare of the animals and promotes environmental sustainability.

In a pasture-raised system, pigs have ample space to roam, root, and exhibit natural behaviors, which contributes to their overall health and well-being. They are free to graze on grass, forage for roots, and even indulge in natural treats like fallen fruits and nuts. This varied diet results in pork that is often considered to have a richer flavor and superior texture compared to conventionally raised pork.

Overall, pasture-raised pork offers consumers a high-quality, ethically produced meat option that reflects a commitment to animal welfare, environmental stewardship, and delicious, flavorful pork products.

Our Pigs

Locally sourced: We purchased our pigs from a farm in Flemingsburg, Ky in May 2024. Most of them are a Gloucester Old Spot (GOS) crossed with Hereford. One of pigs is a Hereford/Hampshire cross.

Natural Pig Lifestyle: Our pigs lead a charmed life, rotating through pasture and wooded areas. They spent one week in our barn being trained to an electric fence before being moved outside. The pigs are moved to new ground roughly every 10 days and not to exceed 12 days in one location. This holistic approach ensures they're always content and well-cared for.

Feed: In addition to the food obtained by foraging the woods, the pigs are given a swine grower ration that we mix ourselves. The ration includes corn, soybeans, oats, Fertrell Fish Meal, RC Gold 4x (from Fertrell) and Swine Grower Premix minerals (from Fertrell). The pigs receive food scraps from our garden, kitchen and a local produce farmer that are provided as treats.

Growth: The pigs are expected to be between 200lbs to 250lbs of live weight at the time of processing (November/December).
