We had a request for a gift to prepare a wooden organizer for hair tools to be placed on a bathroom countertop.
As a girl, I understand the necessity to keep all of the tools of beauty organized for quick use and was excited for this project! I may even request one for myself in the future.
This project was made from a wind-felled red oak tree obtained from a neighbor after a rough storm. We assisted the neighbor in harvesting the tree for removal and he graciously allowed us to keep the wood. We cut the red oak into slabs with the sawmill and dried it in our solar kiln. The wood was then cut, sanded and attached together to create the design as requested by the customer.
We discussed the piece with the customer along the way to determine any personalization or other style design ideas.
(The cups were put in place AFTER the design details were complete on the wooden pieces)
Wood conditioner and a few layers of lightly applied walnut stain were applied to bring out the wood grain and give it a darker color.
After the color was approved by the customer, a water-based polyurethane was applied to provide additional protection. Then, the stainless-steel cups were permanently placed and sealed to prevent any movement during use.
In my excitement to get this project to the customer for her gift-giving, I forgot to take a final picture before delivery! Ugh!! There are definitely things that I need to work on improving and photography skills are one of them!
Anyway, we heard from the gift giver (and later from the receiver) that they were thrilled with the gift. We were so happy to be a part of this way that family members showed love to each other!
