As many of you know, I winter is my least favorite season. I prefer the warm sun, the green grass and soft breezes. Our chickens do not seem to show as much of a distaste for the season as I do but they do stay much closer to the coop during the cold weather.
I wanted to provide them with a treat and attempted to grow and give them wheat grass. It is so much easier than you think!
I started with soaking the wheatgrass seeds overnight.
Then, I transferred the seeds to containers with small holes in the bottom. I set the containers on top of old pasta sauce lids to elevate them from the bottom container. This allowed for proper drainage and to prevent mold.
I rinsed the seeds about once a day to keep them moist. It didn't take them long to sprout.
The roots wound around each other and formed a carpet base.
In about a week, the grass had grown to several inches tall!
It was a fun and short experiment on its own but the real test was to see if the chickens were as impressed as I was with this new treat.
They ran to the remaining seeds first (as would be expected) but once they finished fighting each other, they seemed to enjoy this green treat on the cold day!
