Homeschool Update - October

We have been homeschooling for many years and I sometimes forget that what we do isn't the same for others. So, I am writing a monthly homeschool recap to demonstrate one way (there are so many methods out there!) that homeschooling can work.

We use an eclectic method of homeschooling that leans very heavily towards the Charlotte Mason method of teaching. Without going into too much detail about this method, it can be described as very literature-heavy. We read and discuss A LOT of books. We don't spend a lot of time on workbooks, worksheets, etc., We have gravitated toward this method over the years and found that it works very well for our learners and family lifestyle.

Here are some items that we have read, listened to or watched during the month of October:

Our sons attended their FFA Animal Science class.

- They designed and presented a representation of a digestive tract in an animal.

- Listened to lecture by a local veterinarian about mare foaling.

- They participated in a lecture about animal digestion.

- They participated in an animal science lab. They discovered how gas accumulation can occur and constructed a digestive system.

- In addition to their class on animal science, their FFA teacher presented a lecture and activity related to project management. This didn't have as many interesting photos, so I'm not going to include them.

Our sons worked with the lumber portion of the business. They rotated inventory throughout various kilns and storage areas. They also assisted in sawmilling jobs for customers.

Our sons participated in 4H livestock skillathon meetings. They found it very informative and are considering a team competition in the future.

A couple of our kids participate in the local co-op. Our son attends classes for Bible and Art. Our daughter attends classes for Bible, Art, Science and Logic. They really enjoy their time learning with their friends.

Our sons participated in the Youth Group at church. They enjoy fellowship and discussions of Biblical principles.

Our daughter helped to harvest fiber from our French Angora rabbits and attempted to card the fiber. She is also taking crocheting lessons from the Master Crocheter. These are portions of her Fiber Arts elective.

Our oldest son is taking elective classes through Bluegrass UnitedThese classes include Interpersonal Communication, History of Comic Books and Critical Thinking. He is enjoying both the alternative to his core classes and the time discussing the topics with friends.

Our oldest son is preparing for his driver's license permit test. I'm sure he will do well, but it is very humbling for a parent to see their child hit this milestone.

We hosted a get-together with out-of-town friends. We prepared food, enjoyed great conversation and the kids found a way to break our trampoline.

Our son worked on his Papaw's farm. He spent time fixing fence, working cattle and helped to put up hay for the winter.

Our daughters attended their first 4H Crochet Club meeting. It was great to meet others that have a similar interest, but it may not be a fit for our family. We will evaluate our time and other commitments before continuing.

Our son attended a Barn Dance hosted by Bluegrass United. He had a great time hanging out with his friends...

... Even if he didn't appreciate his mama sneaking in to grab a picture!

The soccer season was in full swing with practices and games for our daughter and sons.

The boys won the Landmark Invitational Tournament!!

They won second place in their division in the National Tournament.

The hubby accompanied our son to the tournament.

They met up with the Bluegrass United Girl's Soccer team and cheered them on whenever possible. It was a great way to represent this area of Kentucky!

They found time to enjoy themselves when not on the field.

Even the parents found time to play board games!

They enjoyed meals together.

They explored the area's attractions.

Our daughter learned how to make dehydrated tomato flakes. It is going to be used to season our foods this winter.

Our daughters attended a Hands-on-Horses class with Riding with RhythmThey learned about the care of horses while also enjoying some costume fun!

The activities were led by their favorite teacher, Ms. Shirley.

We picked apples at Stepping Stone Farm

Our son is working to improve his wildcrafting and plant identification skills. He is identifying various plants on the farm. This is followed by research and making herbal preparations.

We celebrated a birthday. She asked to go out for a meal followed by an afternoon of lounging at home watching The Princess Diaries movies. The boys were not excited about this plan, but we discovered that they did laugh at a few scenes. The girls and I are excited for the possibility of a third Princess Diaries movie.

We continued to work on the farm. Our littlest one loves to be included with the outdoor chores.

They built new raised beds. We hope to expand this part of the garden next year.

We found time to enjoy life outdoors.

Of course, we spent time reading great books and other schoolwork.

Our lives are not what is considered normal, but we are loving it this way!
