Homeschool Update - September

We have been homeschooling for many years and I sometimes forget that what we do isn't the same for others. So, I decided to try adding a monthly homeschool recap to this blog to demonstrate one way (there are so many methods out there!) that homeschooling can work.

We use an eclectic method of homeschooling that leans very heavily towards the Charlotte Mason method of teaching. Without going into too much detail about this method, it can be described as very literature-heavy. We read and discuss A LOT of books. We don't spend a lot of time on workbooks, worksheets, etc., We have gravitated toward this method over the years and found that it works very well for our learners and family lifestyle.

Here are a few field trips/activities that we have participated in during the month of September:

- We returned to our homeschool co-op.

The high school and middle school kids participate in an Art class focusing on charcoal and watercolor techniques, a Literature class with some writing components and a Bible class. The elementary students are participating in classes for Bible, Science, Logic and PE.

- The boys attended their first FFA meeting.

While the boys participated in class, the girls enjoyed reading at the library.

- Our son continued his participation in the Farmers Market.

- The kids helped to work our booth at two different craft shows.

This is a family business where everyone pitches in where they can be useful!

- The boys worked with their cousins and papaw to load hay.

- As part of their FFA group, the boys participated in a field trip to the Farm Science Review in Ohio.

 - The younger kids participated in a co-op field trip to the Scott Co Fire Station.

It was a great experience. We learned a lot!

- Our soccer seasons ramped up with a very busy month of activities.

Our daughter rediscovered her love for the sport.

We are VERY thankful for the accommodation that GFC and our coach made to allow both of our kids to play on the same team! It is difficult transporting children to various events and finding recreational teams that will put siblings on the same team to assist with this issue is very helpful.

They are both working hard. It's great to see them challenge themselves and improve their skills.

Our oldest son continued his season with Bluegrass United. This has been a wonderful team for both him and our family. Lucky for this mama, the other parents are amazing photographers and shared these great pictures with us.

She may not be officially on a team, but she is very active on the sidelines!

- Our daughter decided to pursue her interest in photography.

She has been reading books, watching videos and performing art challenges with multiple camera types. She isn't an expert but is simply learning as she goes and has an eye for action shots (I don't have them uploaded) and other creative photos.

- We attended a family reunion.

Our cousin set up this bouncy house for our enjoyment. If you are in the need for inflatables, extreme dodgeball, Nerf Wars or other fun entertainment, check out @DsExtremeSports on Facebook or email him directly at dsextremesports@gmail.com.

  - We worked together to process chickens for the first time.

If you want more details of this activity, check out our blog post: Processing Chickens – Growing Roots Farm (shopifypreview.com)

This was a very hands-on learning experience.

Even the baby participated!

 - The kids helped us move our baby chicks from the brooder and into their new home on pasture.
