One Gift They Read

A few years ago, we decided to tailor the Christmas gift list for the kids. This process was initially designed to decrease costs of buying gifts for four children. We have used this method for a few years and really like it. It hasn't really decreased the price that much because they tend to get larger or more expensive items during this one time of the year. However, it simplifies the shopping process and allows them more time to enjoy each gift.

Today, I'm going to discuss what we do for the "1 gift they read" portion. We read a lot of books in our house and probably own more books than the average family. I justify a lot of them because we homeschool but in all honesty, we simply love to collect books. For their Christmas book gifts, we try to do something special. This usually involves a boxed set or a book with elaborate illustrations. Some things that we have purchased in the past include:

    - A classical set of Winnie-the-Pooh books

    - Boxed set of Mary Poppins books by P.L. Travers

    - A beautifully illustrated book of Beatrix Potter stories

    - A collection of The Hardy Boys books

    - Boxed set of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe series

    - Boxed set of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books

    - The Green Ember series by S.D. Smith

     - Various illustrated Bibles

One great resource that I discovered while searching for these gifts was a small bookstore, The Next Chapter Bookstore. They have been amazingly helpful in finding the books that I need and were a one-stop shopping experience for this portion of my list. Now, they even have a coffee shop located in the store so that I may indulge in a treat while picking up my order!
