If you have spent any time around backyard chickens or local farms, you probably heard people talk about "unwashed eggs." Many customers are surprised to learn that fresh eggs naturally come with a protective coating. This means that they do not need to be washed immediately after collection.
At Growing Roots Farm, we often receive questions about unwashed eggs, why some farms sell them, and whether they are available from us. Here's what you should know.
What Is an Unwashed Egg?
When a hen lays an egg, it is covered with a natural protective layer called the "bloom". This coating helps seal the pores of the eggshell and serves as a barrier against bacteria and moisture loss.
As long as the bloom remains intact and the egg is properly handled, unwashed eggs can be stored at room temperature for a period of time. This is why many countries outside the United States commonly sell eggs unrefrigerated.
Once an egg is washed, however, the bloom is removed. Washed eggs should be refrigerated to maintain freshness and food safety.
Why Do We Wash Our Eggs?
While many customers prefer unwashed eggs, we are required to follow regulations governing the sale of eggs through farmers markets and other retail outlets.
To remain in compliance with these regulations and to provide a consistent product for market customers, the eggs we sell at farmers markets and other public sales locations are washed and refrigerated.
Our washing process removes dirt and debris from the shell, resulting in a clean, attractive product while meeting applicable market requirements.
Can We Sell Unwashed Eggs?
Yes.
Kentucky regulations allow farms to sell eggs directly to consumers under certain circumstances. Because of this, we can provide unwashed eggs when they are purchased directly from our farm and requested by the customer.
Many customers who prefer to preserve the natural bloom choose this option, particularly those who are familiar with handling farm fresh eggs.
How to Request Unwashed Eggs
If you would like unwashed eggs with your order, simply add a note when placing your order online.
We will do our best to accommodate your request and provide eggs that have not been washed. Please note that unwashed eggs may have minor cosmetic dirt or stains on the shell, which is completely normal for fresh eggs collected directly from the nest box.
Our Commitment to Quality
Whether washed or unwashed, our eggs come from hens raised on pasture with access to fresh air, sunshine, and a healthy chicken diet (including non-GMO, organic, soy-free feed). We take pride in producing high-quality eggs and believe customers should have the opportunity to choose the option that best fits their preferences.
If you have questions about egg handling, storage, or the differences between washed and unwashed eggs, we'd be happy to help. We love educating customers about where their food comes from and how it's produced.
Want unwashed eggs? Simply leave a note with your online order, and we'll gladly provide them whenever available.
