Homeschool Update - August

We have been homeschooling for many years and I sometimes forget that what we do isn't the same for others. So, I decided to try adding a monthly homeschool recap to this blog to demonstrate one way (there are so many methods out there!) that homeschooling can work.

We use an eclectic method of homeschooling that leans very heavily towards the Charlotte Mason method of teaching. Without going into too much detail about this method, it can be described as very literature-heavy. We read and discuss A LOT of books. We don't spend a lot of time on workbooks, worksheets, etc., We have gravitated toward this method over the years and found that it works very well for our learners and family lifestyle.

Here are a few field trips/activities that we have participated in during the month of August:

- We constantly eat during our school day, but it doesn't interfere with our work.

- The kids take turns preparing family suppers. They are becoming quite the chefs!

- Our oldest continued his soccer season with Bluegrass United.

- Our daughter started her soccer season with the local recreational league.

- Our other daughter and son began practice for their soccer season.

- The kids set up a D&D game night with their cousins. They hope to make this a regular event.

- Some friends allowed us to pick blackberries from their patch. We ate them fresh, made cobbler, canned jam and freeze-dried some for snacks.

She "hit the jackpot" as she squeezed between the rows!

They were a hit with everyone!

 -  We welcomed new Nigerian Dwarf goats to our farm! We may try our luck at milking them in the future.

 - Our daughter completed the chore of painting the chicken tractor door.

 - We shucked and canned corn.

We had help but she was photo-shy!

This one isn't afraid of the camera!

- We celebrated a birthday.

- The boys worked to build a sheep shelter.

 - We welcomed sheep to our farm.

- We ended the summer season with fun at the pool.

 - We welcomed new baby chicks to the farm.

- We continued to participate in the local Farmers Market.

- Our son was interviewed by the local newspaper about his participation in the Farmers Market. A portion of his interview was published in the local paper.

 - Our oldest worked with the hubby to cut a walnut log on the sawmill for a customer.

- A family member invited us over to pick apples. We ate them fresh, made applesauce and pies.
