Spring Time on the Farm

Spring Time on the Farm

Springtime is an exciting time! The weather starts to warm up, the sun spends more time in the sky and the overall mood seems to be lifted in the air.    It is also a busy time on our farm.   We are planting seeds. We are hoping to have a larger garden and expand into a flower market this year (if the plants are cooperative). In order to give the seeds a jumpstart, we started using heating mats. In the past, I simply kept the seeds in the main living areas of the house where it is warmer but...

Homeschool Update - January

Homeschool Update - January

We have been homeschooling for many years and I sometimes forget that what we do isn't the same for others. So, I decided to try adding a monthly homeschool recap to this blog to demonstrate one way (there are so many methods out there!) that homeschooling can work.  We use an eclectic method of homeschooling that leans very heavily towards the Charlotte Mason method of teaching. Valentine's Day Gift

Valentine's Day Gift

I finally had to admit to myself that we do not live the "normal" lifestyle of a typical American family. We have been gradually making changes to our lives over several years and our lifestyle has become so normal for us that I forget that it isn't the same for other families. Our weirdness showed itself in the manner of how we celebrated Valentine's Day this year.  What did your man get you for Valentine's Day?       - Flowers?      - Candy?       - A night out?   Well, my hubby gave in to another one of...

Hatching Baby Chicks

Hatching Baby Chicks

Our son received an egg incubator for a Christmas gift. We waited until after the new year to put this machine to work on our farm.  We have a couple of roosters and multiple hens so we can assume that the eggs produced by our hens will be fertile. We gathered the eggs as we normally do and placed them into the incubator. The directions for the machine were simple and straightforward.  As you can see, we did not wash the eggs. We simply removed them from the nesting boxes and placed them directly into the incubator. The eggs are divided...
